Jesus is God; He is also called the Son of God. Perhaps the best-known verse in the entire Bible derived from John’s gospel. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The gift of eternal life is immediately granted to the individual who places his or her reliance upon Jesus’ finished work. What exactly did He do?
Jesus is the Lamb of God who came to save the world. Jesus took upon Himself the sin of the world. When John the Baptist saw Jesus, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). Jesus became our substitute and chose to die upon the cross for our sin. Just before He died, He cried out, “It is finished” (John 19:30). Tax documents found in the first century had the same Greek term stamped upon them when the bill was paid in full. Not only did Jesus take upon Himself our sin at the cross, but also He rose again the third day demonstrating that He’s God.
Jesus is called Lord and God. Jesus made numerous appearances after His resurrection. Thomas, also known as “doubting Thomas” was not in the room when Jesus had miraculously entered, where many of His followers were assembled. Thomas doubted the testimony of the others. Later, Jesus appeared to some of Jesus’ followers with Thomas present. He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing” (John 20:27). How did Thomas respond? “And Thomas answered and said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God” (John 20:28)!
So now back to answer our first question “Who is Jesus?” Jesus is the Son of God and is God. What does that mean to me? It means that He has the ability to save you. Save you from what? You see, all mankind has sinned and cannot get to Heaven (Romans 3:23) because our sin blocks us from God. God therefore had to become a man and give us the gift of eternal life. The gift of eternal life cannot be earned. Jesus, God’s sacrificial Lamb, took our sin upon Himself. Even right now anyone can receive the gift of everlasting life by trusting in Jesus, who died for the sin of the world, and was raised from the dead. Upon believing in Him, the Bible promises, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in Him name” (John 1:12). I invite you, to worship the One who is God, who died to save you. Put your faith in Jesus’ finished work and enjoy the gift of eternal life.
