Who Is Jesus?

One of the greatest questions mankind can ask is “Who is Jesus?” Really – who is He? Some say He is God while others say He was just a good prophet.  This brings up an interesting question –  If Who is Jesus 1He is God then He would have the power and authority to let mankind into Heaven. If He was simply a man then He would not have that authority and we must look elsewhere. Therefore the question must be raised, “Is Jesus God” and if He is, “What does that mean to me?” After all, many men have claimed to be God, so how can we know that Jesus is authentic? We can find these answers in the book which God has given us – the Bible.

The Bible is a large Book that can be complex, yet when it is understood correctly, can answer these and many other questions. Each of the sixty-six individual books in the Bible have a theme or main point. The book of John was written to answer the question – “Who is Jesus?” John who was one of Jesus’ disciples and spent nearly three years with Jesus. Just spend three years with anyone and you will know their true character. In other words, John is a good firsthand source.  John wrote his gospel to reveal Jesus to his readers. He penned,

“And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written [why?] that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.”

John wrote to the early church to disclose what he had personally come to understand about Jesus. He wanted people to see Jesus for who He really is. He desired people to believe that Jesus is God, who died for the sin of the world, and was raised from the dead. Ninety-nine times John used the word “believe” in his gospel. Clearly his goal was to show the world that if anyone puts his or her faith in Jesus Christ, then they would be given the gift of eternal life.

John began his writing showing that Jesus is eternally God. In other words Jesus has always been God.” John 1:1 states, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Three times John used the same Greek word translated “was,” which shows continuous action in past time to describe Jesus. In common language (for those of us who don’t know Greek) this means that John testified that Jesus has always existed. John also identifies the Word in Revelation 19:13 (one of the 5 books he wrote) when he refereed to Jesus as the one whose “name is called the Word of God.

Jesus is God; He is also called the Son of God. Perhaps the best-known verse in the entire Bible derived from John’s gospel. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The gift of eternal life is immediately granted to the individual who places his or her reliance upon Jesus’ finished work. What exactly did He do?

Jesus is the Lamb of God who came to save the world. Jesus took upon Himself the sin of the world. When John the Baptist saw Jesus, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). Jesus became our substitute and chose to die upon the cross for our sin. Just before He died, He cried out, “It is finished” (John 19:30). Tax documents found in the first century had the same Greek term stamped upon them when the bill was paid in full. Not only did Jesus take upon Himself our sin at the cross, but also He rose again the third day demonstrating that He’s God.

Jesus is called Lord and God. Jesus made numerous appearances after His resurrection. Thomas, also known as “doubting Thomas” was not in the room when Jesus had miraculously entered, where many of His followers were assembled. Thomas doubted the testimony of the others. Later, Jesus appeared to some of Jesus’ followers with Thomas present. He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing” (John 20:27). How did Thomas respond? “And Thomas answered and said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God” (John 20:28)!

So now back to answer our first question “Who is Jesus?” Jesus is the Son of God and is God. What does that mean to me? It means that He has the ability to save you. Save you from what? You see, all mankind has sinned and cannot get to Heaven (Romans 3:23) because our sin blocks us from God. God therefore had to become a man and give us the gift of eternal life. The gift of eternal life cannot be earned. Jesus, God’s sacrificial Lamb, took our sin upon Himself. Even right now anyone can receive the gift of everlasting life by trusting in Jesus, who died for the sin of the world, and was raised from the dead. Upon believing in Him, the Bible promises, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in Him name” (John 1:12). I invite you, to worship the One who is God, who died to save you. Put your faith in Jesus’ finished work and enjoy the gift of eternal life.
